The signing of the first contracts between the Danish government and an international consortium at the end of May 2016 set the course for Europe's largest infrastructure project. Over a length of around 18 kilometers, an underwater tunnel is to connect the islands of Fehmarn and Lolland - shortening the journey between the German and Danish coasts to just ten minutes by car and seven minutes by train.

The extension of subway line 4 beyond its current terminus at HafenCity University in an eastward direction is intended to connect the future Elbbrücken quarter in eastern HafenCity better with Hamburg's local transport network. To this end, the new section of the U4 underground line will be built in a tunnel following the sweeping and parking facility currently under construction. The underground line will then emerge from the underground and lead via a trough above ground to the new Elbbrücken station.

Finally free ride again

The offices in the container facilities are almost empty, only the asphalt is being renewed at the Holledau service area. After a good six months of continuous operation on the construction site between the Neufahrn junction and the Holledau triangle, things are now much more relaxed: traffic is once again unrestricted, and at peak times the hard shoulder can now also be used as a fourth lane. This significantly reduces the risk of traffic jams on the busy route. Take a deep breath - both for the drivers and for project manager Günter Graf, who looks after the construction site and can look back on exhausting, but above all successful weeks.

Filigree steel bridge construction with record height

There are still no vehicles in the Hochsauerlandkreis that roll over the Schlebornbach at a height of 115 metres. But already now the valley bridge Nuttlar, North Rhine-Westphalia's highest bridge structure, presents itself in impressive elegance. Nestled gracefully in the landscape, it is part of the 5.6-kilometer-long new section of the Autobahn 46 - and a masterpiece of impressive engineering: because the more beautiful a bridge is, the more elaborate its construction usually is.

The new ICE line has arrived in Ulm

One last rumble under the Michelsberg was heard when the two excavator milling machines were eating their way through the last piece of rock in mid-November 2016. Dust fountains whirled up, then it was done. To the applause of about 450 guests from politics and business, a seven-minute laser show finally announced the light at the end of the tunnel. The Albabstiegstunnel has officially been breached.

First deployment of FF Bögl in Israel

On the historic railway route from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, which dates back to the Ottoman period, the journey now takes one and a half hours. From mid-2018, modern high-tech trains on Israel's first high-speed line will reduce the journey time between the two largest metropolises to one third.
