In November 2016, the gap over the Mombach branch of the Rhine was closed with the addition of another 120-metre-long bridge section. As a counterpart to the northern section, the southern, undercurrent section between the Rhine island and the banks of the Rhineland-Palatinate could thus also be completed - albeit two months late. Originally, the 2,000 tonne bridge section was to be floated in as early as September. However, an unusually long low water phase in the Rhine, which was untypical for the season and unusually long, delayed the construction progress. The bridge specialists from Max Bögl had to be permanently in the starting blocks for weeks, waiting for rising water levels. At least 3.20 metres of water height were required so that the bridge section and the pontoon would not touch down on the Rhine floor when the boat was floating in.
