Real laboratory for digital services

VW opens IT:City in Wolfsburg.

As a driver of innovation and quality, Volkswagen relies on digitisation. The automobile manufacturer has now set up a modern office campus in Wolfsburg for the IT experts.

Real laboratory for digital services

In May 2017, the ceremonial opening of the IT:City in Wolfsburg took place with a symbolic key handover - a project of superlatives, which was completed on schedule after only one and a half years of construction by Max Bögl as general contractor in cooperation with other construction companies. As the client, Volkswagen Immobilien GmbH was responsible for project development and implementation.

Cluster for IT experts

The office ensemble was built on an area of around 55,000 square metres near the office centre in Kästorf - and sets standards in terms of architecture and functionality. Six 90-metre-long building blocks crossing a 175-metre-long central wing contain modernly equipped and innovatively designed office space. For better orientation, the individual crossing points in the core zones are designed in different colours. The campus-like building complex with around 33,000 square metres of office space is consistently tailored to agile work: with work islands for project teams, communicative meeting points and fully networked conference rooms. All workstations are geared to the digital age. Mobile terminals will replace fixed-line telephones and workstations in the future. The aim is to promote cooperation between specialists from a wide range of specialist areas and departments and to give employees more room for flexibility and creativity.

Think tank with high-quality data technology

Construction of the IT:City office building with 1,400 workstations and the company restaurant with 460 seats began with the ground-breaking ceremony in April 2015. 47,300 tonnes of concrete, including more than 1,500 precast concrete elements, had been used in the building complex by the topping-out ceremony in February 2016. At just under 630 kilometres, the length of the copper cables laid for data technology is approximately the distance between Wolfsburg and Munich. In addition, 50 kilometres of heating and cooling piping, connected to two district heating stations and four cooling units on the roof of the campus, ensure pleasant temperatures in the offices.

In order to make the layout and use of the workspaces as flexible as possible, 1,250 air-conditioning chests were installed in the office space for heating and cooling. Each of the 2,700 windows has its own individually controllable external sun protection. The office areas are equipped with cavity floors, in which in turn removable double floor routes are integrated. In these routes there are 3,440 floor tanks for the individual supply of the workplaces with power and data connections.
