Bridge renovation in two acts

Replacement of the Exterheide viaduct. The six-lane extension of the A 1 motorway between the Lengerich junction and the Lotte/Osnabrück junction is still in the planning approval phase. But the demolition of three valley bridges in need of rehabilitation, including their new construction with three lanes in each direction, began as early as summer 2015.

Bridge renovation in two acts

North Rhine-Westphalia relies on the bridge construction expertise of Max Bögl for the construction of the longest structure, the Exterheide viaduct, which is 430 metres long. Over the next 30 months, the replacement of the Habichtswald, Smanforde and Exterheide viaducts on a total construction section of almost two kilometres will be completed on behalf of the North Rhine-Westphalian Road Construction Authority. 63 million euros from the federal government's replacement construction programme are available for this purpose. The almost 50-year-old Exterheide viaduct near the city of Tecklenburg - like its two shorter bridge pendants - a prestressed concrete beam bridge with two separate superstructures each and the increasing traffic is no longer able to cope. After the demolition of the first half of the existing structure, the new bridge section with three lanes each and a hard shoulder, consisting of a single-cell box girder with external tendons, will be constructed first. After its release and reallocation for traffic, the other half of the old structure will be demolished and replaced by the second new bridge of identical construction. For the construction of both superstructures, feed scaffolding is used. In addition, a 60-metre-long gabion retaining wall is to be erected to support the north-eastern abutment slope opposite the parallel "Exterheider Damm" service road.
